With the collaboration of Moment Factory, a spring 2011 exhibition at the Musée de la civilisation de Québec - RIFF: When Africa Got Us Groovin' - was transformed into a unique experience. The show was all about African-American influences on popular musical genres. To create a fully immersive experience, Moment Factory built lighting devices that worked in sync with the soundscape and videos. The devices, placed in the exhibition's three zones, were effective in capturing visitor's attention and imagination. Inspired by representations of sound waves, the visual design for RIFF included a path paced by pulses of light, in perfect harmony with the exhibits. In a section named the Concert Garden, excerpts from performances by artists such as Jimi Hendrix and with the contents of the videos, for example by reproducing the white flash bulbs and coloured lights seen onstage and in the crowd during the historic concerts. Lastly, the lighting drew attention to the presence and value of priceless objects like Miles Davis' trumpet, a Gabonese xylophone or Ella
Fitzgerald's dress, using leading-edge technology solutions to meet conservation standards.
